Highlights: Delicious, well cooked, flavorful souvlaki. Excellent pita.
Lowlights: Pitas are small, and cost $6 each.
As one of the longest-standing food trucks around, Souvlaki GR is doing something right. Between winning the people’s choice Vendy in 2011 to being featured on countless “best of” lists, the guys on this truck clearly have a good thing going. For this reason, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the day when the truck was close enough to my office to try. But since that was taking a bit too long, I huffed it out on the Citibike to get the first taste of this phenom.
Choosing a dish from this menu was definitely not hard. With only a few options in front of me, I quickly selected the beef pita and the chicken pita. And of course, I had to make the chicken “GR” style, although I had no idea what that actually meant. (+$1)
I was blown away by the tastiness of this food. The first bite hit me with a world of different textures. It started with the oily flakiness of the pita, traveled through to the soft and flavorful meat, crispy red onions, creamy tzatziki/feta combo and cool refreshing bite of the tomatoes. There was also a few french fries jammed in there for good measure. A very enjoyable couple of bites.
Overall, the chicken was better and doing it GR style was definitely the right move. I thought the char on the chicken was perfect, and the feta blended together very nicely with all the rest of the meal.
My biggest [and probably only] gripe with SGR was the price. Although six bucks for a pita may seem reasonable at first, keep in mind these are not your run of the mill pitas. While they taste a whole lot better, they are also significantly smaller and it’s going to take at least two to constitute a substantial meal. Then you’re faced with spending twelve bucks on lunch, which is by no means a bargain. Some kind of combo would go a long way for this truck.
The guys at the truck were very approachable and pretty honest when I asked them about portion size. I’m also happy I took their advice and got my chicken pita GR style. I received my food in a relatively timely manner after I ordered it, and it was wrapped up neatly for me to enjoy.
These pitas looked good. As you can see from the picture, they were oozing with all those awesome ingredients just tempting me to dig in. They were wrapped up nice and tight, and placed perfectly in some wax paper with a custom sticker.
I can definitely see what all the hype surrounding Souvlaki GR is about. They are an awesome looking truck serving up some very tasty Greek food. I’ll be certain to return, even if it means an extra stop at the bank beforehand.
